Refresher driving lessons and Pass Plus
Holding a full licence and actually feeling confident on the road are two different things. Maybe you passed years ago and haven't driven much since, maybe a knock to your confidence has kept you off the road, or maybe you've just passed and want to tackle motorways and busier routes. Whatever brought you here, refresher driving lessons are designed exactly for you — and there's no judgement, only a calm, patient restart.

Who refresher lessons are for
Refresher lessons suit a wide range of full licence-holders:
- Returning drivers who passed a while ago and have barely driven since.
- Anxious drivers who've lost confidence after a break, a near-miss, or a change in circumstances.
- New passers who want extra practice before driving alone, or who'd like to build up to motorways and dual carriageways.
- Drivers in unfamiliar situations — a new car, a new area like Bedfordshire or Hertfordshire, or roads that have changed since you last drove.
If you feel rusty rather than unsafe, that's completely normal — and it tends to come back quicker than you'd think. Even after years away from driving, a few patient sessions are often enough to get the muscle memory firing again.
What refresher lessons cover
Unlike learning from scratch, there's no fixed syllabus. Refresher lessons are tailored entirely around what you want to work on, so your first session usually starts with a relaxed chat about how you feel and where you'd like to build confidence. From there, a typical plan might cover:
- Getting comfortable with the controls again on quiet residential streets
- Junctions, roundabouts, and busier town driving at your own pace
- Parking and the manoeuvres, if those are a worry
- Motorways and dual carriageways
- Specific situations you'd like to conquer — perhaps a particular junction, night driving, or a route you'll use often
Every lesson is one hour in a dual-controlled, manual Ford Fiesta, so you're always safe while you find your feet. There's no shouting and no pressure — just steady, encouraging support. Our guide for nervous drivers explains the calm approach in more detail.
There's no minimum number of lessons either. Some people want a single session to shake off the nerves; others prefer a handful spread over a few weeks. Block bookings bring the hourly rate down if you'd like more than one, and if you need something more bespoke — say an intensive refresher before a new job — just get in touch for a tailored quote.
Motorway lessons
A lot of drivers feel uneasy about motorways, often because they never drove on one while learning. The good news is that learners and new drivers can take motorway lessons with an approved driving instructor (ADI) in a dual-control car — this has been allowed since 2018. So whether you've recently passed or simply avoided motorways for years, you can build that confidence properly, with an instructor beside you and dual controls for reassurance.
What is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is a post-test training scheme designed to give newer drivers broader, real-world experience. It's made up of practical modules covering:
- Town driving
- Rural roads
- Dual carriageways
- Night driving
- All-weather driving
- Motorways
There's no test at the end — it's about experience and confidence rather than passing or failing. As a bonus, some insurers offer a discount to drivers who've completed Pass Plus, so it can occasionally help with those steep first-year premiums. It's worth checking with your insurer first, as offers vary.
A note for brand-new drivers
If you've passed within the last couple of years, it's worth knowing the new driver rule: if you build up 6 or more penalty points within 2 years of passing, your licence is revoked and you'd have to reapply and re-sit both your theory and practical tests. It's one more reason that calm, confident driving in those early months really pays off — and exactly the kind of thing extra lessons help you avoid.
Ready to get back behind the wheel?
There's no such thing as being too out of practice, and no question is too small. Free pick-up and drop-off is included, and lessons go entirely at your pace.
If you'd like a patient, supportive restart — whether that's a single refresher session, motorway confidence, or Pass Plus — take a look at our prices or get in touch. A friendly message is often the easiest first step.
Frequently asked questions
What are refresher driving lessons?
Refresher lessons are for people who already hold a full licence but feel out of practice or have lost confidence. There's no fixed syllabus — the lessons are tailored around what you want to work on, whether that's town driving, parking, motorways, or simply getting comfortable behind the wheel again. They take place in a dual-controlled manual car, so you're always safe.
Can I take motorway lessons if I've already passed?
Yes. Learners and new drivers have been allowed to take motorway lessons with an approved driving instructor (ADI) in a dual-control car since 2018. It's a great way to build confidence on faster roads with an instructor beside you, whether you've just passed or have avoided motorways for years.
Does Pass Plus reduce my insurance?
It can. Pass Plus is a post-test scheme covering town, rural, dual carriageway, night, all-weather, and motorway driving, with no test at the end. Some insurers offer a discount to drivers who've completed it, so it's worth checking with your insurer, as offers vary from one company to another.
What is the new driver 6 points rule?
If you get 6 or more penalty points within 2 years of passing your test, your licence is revoked. You'd then need to reapply for a provisional licence and pass both your theory and practical tests again before driving alone. It's a strong reason to drive carefully and build solid confidence in those first couple of years.
