Everything you need to pass the UK theory test
You have to pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test — and the good news is that, with the right preparation, it's very passable. What the theory test involves
The car theory test has two separate parts, and you need to pass both in the same sitting:
- Multiple-choice questions — 50 questions, and you need 43 correct to pass. You get 57 minutes, with an optional practice session first.
- Hazard perception — 14 short video clips containing 15 scoreable hazards. You click when you spot a hazard developing; the earlier you react, the more points (up to 5 per hazard). You need 44 out of 75 to pass.
If you pass one part but fail the other, you unfortunately have to retake the whole test.
The multiple-choice section
The questions are drawn from three sources every learner should know:
- The Highway Code
- Know Your Traffic Signs
- The official DVSA theory revision material
Topics range from road signs and stopping distances to safety, attitude and what to do at the scene of an incident. Some questions are presented as a short case study. Nothing is designed to trick you — if you've revised properly, you'll recognise the answers.
The hazard perception section
This is the part learners worry about most, but it's simple once you understand it. You watch clips filmed from a driver's view and click the moment a hazard starts to develop — for example, a parked car's door beginning to open, or a pedestrian stepping towards the kerb.
A few tips:
- Click as soon as the hazard begins to develop, then click again if it gets closer. Early, sensible clicks score highest.
- Don't click continuously in a rhythm — the system flags this as cheating and scores that clip zero.
- One clip contains two scoreable hazards, so stay alert all the way through.

Always book through the official GOV.UK service — book your theory test here. It costs a fixed fee (currently £23). Be careful: many lookalike third-party sites charge far more for the same booking, so check the web address ends in gov.uk.

How to revise
- Get the official DVSA Theory Test Kit app — it uses the real question bank.
- Read the Highway Code (free online at GOV.UK) a section at a time.
- Practise hazard perception clips until clicking early feels natural.
- Little and often beats cramming — 15 to 20 minutes a day for a couple of weeks works well.
On the day
Bring your photocard provisional licence — you can't sit the test without it. Arrive about 15 minutes early. The test is taken on a computer at a local test centre, and staff will explain everything before you start.
After you pass
You'll get a theory test pass certificate with a number that's valid for two years. You must take and pass your practical test within those two years, or you'll have to sit the theory test again — so it's worth lining up your practical lessons around it.
