Feeling nervous about your first lesson? Here's exactly what happens
The unknown is the scariest part — so let's remove it. Here's precisely what your first driving lesson with Drive King looks like, what to bring, and how to prepare, so you can turn up feeling ready rather than anxious.
Before the lesson: what to bring
- Your provisional driving licence. This is a legal requirement — your instructor will check it before you set off. You can apply on GOV.UK from age 15 years and 9 months.
- Glasses or contact lenses, if you need them to read a number plate at 20 metres.
- Comfortable, flat shoes. Thin soles let you feel the pedals — avoid heavy boots or flip-flops.
That's it — there's no need to bring anything else.
The first few minutes
We'll meet at a time and place that suits you (pick-up is included). After a quick licence check and a friendly chat about your experience and any worries, we'll head to a quiet residential area with plenty of space. You won't be thrown in at the deep end.
What you'll actually do
Most first lessons cover the basics, gently:
- The cockpit drill — getting comfortable: seat, mirrors, steering position and seatbelt.
- The main controls — what the pedals, gears, handbrake and indicators do.
- Moving off and stopping — the clutch control that everyone worries about, taken slowly and repeated until it clicks.
If it takes the whole lesson to feel happy moving off and stopping, that's perfectly normal — there's no race.
How you'll feel afterwards
Most learners get out of the car relieved and a little proud — it's almost always less scary than they imagined. We'll talk through how it went and plan the next lesson around what you'd like to work on.
A few tips to prepare
- Have something to eat beforehand and get a good night's sleep.
- Try not to over-research — you don't need to know anything in advance.
- If you're an anxious learner, read our guide for nervous drivers — it explains how we keep lessons calm and pressure-free.
